Gewerber — my own product#

Sector
Software for solo self-employed
Project type
Own product: web app with an open core
Year
2026

Starting point#

Anyone working as a solo self-employed person in Germany writes invoices under § 14 UStG, has to handle the small-business rule in § 19 UStG, files receipts for the tax adviser and tracks their time. In practice that is three tools and a spreadsheet — and a term to look up for every question.

Problem#

The usual tools are either subscription-only, explained in officialese, or cannot be self-hosted. People who found a business here but do not work in German rarely find an interface in their own language. And anyone who wants to run the core themselves has no path to do so.

Scope#

Four modules that work together:

  • Invoicing: PDF invoices with § 19 UStG logic, templates in four languages, recurring invoices, reminders and payments.
  • Time tracking: projects, tasks and timers; tracked time becomes invoice line items directly.
  • Bookkeeping: income and expenses, receipts, a simple P&L, export as CSV or JSON.
  • Guidance: explanations in the flow of work, context tooltips and checklists — the deeper explanations are in progress.

The core is open source (MIT) and self-hostable; advanced modules are offered as SaaS.

Result#

Public beta, four languages (German, English, Russian, Turkish). Invoicing, time tracking and bookkeeping are fully usable, guidance for the most part. That is the current state, not a promise — what is still missing is on the roadmap.

Cost#

The open-source core is free and self-hostable. The SaaS plans are €12/month (Pro) and €29/month (Business), with two months free on annual billing; everything is free during the beta.

Screenshots#

Screenshots are to follow; the page deliberately ships without images rather than showing stand-ins. An image slot is marked and will be filled in.

Note#

Gewerber is my own product, not a client reference: I am the founder and developer. That is why it sits under “References” but not under “client voices”. Product and current state: gewerber.de.
